Dubrovnik rewards those who explore beyond the main gate. The marble Stradun runs three hundred metres from gate to gate, the wall circuit above it runs almost two kilometres with the sea on every side, and the lanes between hold baroque churches, one small republic's worth of palaces, and cats asleep on sun-warmed stone.
Ragusa bought its freedom with diplomacy and kept it behind these walls — a merchant republic that rivalled Venice and never fell to a siege.
